Shipley - home of Belloc and the King's Mill
But Shipley Mill's association with West Sussex writer Hilaire Belloc (and to a lesser exent with TV's mop-haired super sleuth Jonathan Creek) has done more than anything to put the village on the map.
Belloc bought King's Land in 1906 and fell in love with the house, surrounding land and above all windmill which made up this idyllic corner of the Sussex Weald.
The Mill goes by several names - Belloc's Mill, Vincent's Mill (named aftere the miller Richard Vincent) and King's Mill, but the best name is that which Belloc called her - Mrs Shipley.
Shipley is a lovely peaceful village cut off from the main hustle and bustle of traffic, even though it's not too far from the busy A24 and A272 roads.
The village is also the near the Knepp Castle Estate and a walk around Shipley village, the castle estate and this part of the Adur Valley is highly recommended.

The Shipley Windmill Society
Although Shipley Mill is now closed to public access, you can find out all about the mill, its interesting history and the great work done over many years by the Friends of Shipley Windmill at the Windmill Society website.
The Countryman Inn
Shipley's pub - introduces itself as a "traditional rural hostelry with open log fires, a cosy bar and a large restaurant " and that's about right.
