Ditchling Common Stud

A leading riding school with excellent facilities. Riding lessons are given in various disciplines such as dressage, show-jumping, and cross-country.

Unusually, it also offers training in Mounted Skill at Arms.

Facilities include one indoor and one outdoor school and, when weather permits, an outdoor skill-at-arms arena, a show jumping arena and a cross country course.

Brendon Stud

Sussex Equestrian Centre
Equestrian Centre, horse and rider shop and stud all rolled into one - horses are bred primarily for show jumping, although other types of horse are also produced by the stud too.

Chailey Stud now has a purpose built show jumping training centre and also offers livery and riding training.

A carriage driving event held each year in Stanmer Park.

Sussex cross country courses

Compton Cross Country Course

A six mile long cross country course with up to 75 jumps. There is also a separate schooling course of one and a half miles.

All set in spectacular remote downland with fantastic views across the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

Fair Oak Cross Country Course

Set in 55 acres of countryside near Rogate. The course is used by Pony Clubs and Riding Clubs between April through September and the course owners also organise their own events.

Well known horse riding charity. In West Sussex the RDA has groups in Arundel, Burstow Park, Hunston near Chichester, Happy Landings near Billingshurst, Lingfield and Kingley Vale.

National registered charity whose aims are to promote everything good about horses and riders in the UK.

The website contains masses of information about horse welfare, including training and qualifications.

There is also some useful information about where to ride, including lists of approved riding establishments and livery yards.

Horse racing

Fontwell Park

Over 20 meetings a year. Fontwell Park, which is five miles east of Chichester, has been voted the ‘Best Small Racecourse in the South East’ for the last 17 years by the Racegoers Club.

In recent years the course has revamped its facilities and it hosts a large number of non-racing events too.
