Worthing and District Paranormal Society

WDPS investigates reports of UFOs, witchcraft and all types of suspected paranormal activity in and around Worthing. The Society operates a 24 hour hotline to help people who believe that they have experienced such strange goings on.

Their website gives some useful tips on how to treat paranormal phenomena such as ...try to ignore them - whatever's behind it is probably just after a bit of attention.

There's also a good section on the strange happenings in Clapham Woods over the years which is a good read if you like spooky tales - or indeed, if you're considering going into Clapham Woods alone and at night.

Haunted Sussex

Ghost stories?
If you're interested in investigating a few reputedly haunted places in Sussex, those which tend to crop up most often are:

Clapham Wood
Clapham Wood has long been held to be a particularlie eerie place, with rumours of satanic rituals and strange activities - even UFO sightings.

The Chichester Inn
The Chichester is a good pub near the Westgate part of Chichester, next to the city walls. The pub is reputed to have a ghost of a Roman soldier of some kind.

Haunted inns
And on the subject of haunted pubs, Ye White Harte Inne in Cuckfield is reported to have a ghostly figure thought to originate from a period before the current building was built in the 19th century. The Kings's Head in Cuckfield is also apparently haunted.

Clayton Tunnel
There are many reportings of ghostly sights in and around the Clayton Railway Tunnel. Many people make the obvious connection with the terrible rail disaster which took place there, but other versions of the ghost story say that the apparitions relate to two soldiers who died in the tunnel while sheltering from a storm. Who knows?

Kingley Vale
Kingley Vale Nature Reserve is a seriously spooky place. Local tradition is that some Danish invaders were put to the sword by local Saxon forces there and that ghostly battles rage amongst the yew trees of Bow Hill. It's certainly a place full of character, with the gnarled ancient trees seeming to have a personality of their own, like ents.

Roadside ghosts
The A24 at Buck Barn near Billingshurst has a ghostly tramp who walks in front of traffic. And the A23 London to Brighton Road has many ghost stories associated with it. The most interesting of these stories concerns the alarmed young woman who hitches a ride from the living only to disappear once she is inside your car. At the A21 near Pyecombe several motorists have believed they have struck a ghostly woman wearing a raincoat who crossed the road in front of them.

Friends Meeting House, Ifield
The Friends Meeting House at Ifield in Crawley is said to be haunted by the ghosts of two children and, possibly, by other spooky characters too.

Horsham Causeway
The delightful Causeway in Horsham can sometimes be made less delightful late at night by a ghostly figure which walks towards St Mary's Church before disappearing.
