West Sussex > Things to do > The River Arun
The Arun winds through its valley between Arundel and Burpham

The Arun - rolling along near Burpham

The Arun used to be one of the main West Sussex highways in medieval times. The River Arun is tidal right up towards Pulborough and control of the river was an essential part of military strategy after the Norman Conquest. Arundel's first Castle was built to exercise this control and a thriving port soon took shape at Arundel, aided an abetted by the satellite port of Littlehampton.

Today the port is of relatively little importance, but the Arun Valley is one of the loveliest parts of West Sussex, with wonderful walks and an important wildlife sanctuary.

This photo was taken from Arundel Castle Cricket Ground.
