Wetland environment in winter

West Sussex Wetland environments

West Sussex has several important wetland habitats each of which is an important place for local and migrating birdlife, unusual plants and other wildlife.

On the coast the two great tidal inlets of Chichester Harbour Pagham Harbour reveal acres of mudflats each tide, enabling specialist organisms to flourish and attracting flocks of feeding birds to the area along the way.

Inland the Arun Valley is another important wetland environment.

The river floods each winter and its broad flood plain north of Amberley creates a wetland habitat which has long being recognised as worthy of the protection they now receive.

Amberley Wild Brooks and Pulborough Brooks are special remote-feeling places, despite being so close to the main towns in West Sussex.

We are lucky to have these special wetland environments, both river and coastal, so close to each other.
