The South Downs Way
At Devil's Dyke

As the South Downs Way approaches Devil's Dyke, as you look south towards the great coastal mass of Brighton you can see the cars on the fast moving A27 flitting in and out between the hills. Thankfully you are unlikely to hear them. In the time since you crossed the A283 at Upper Beeding an hour or so ago, depending on your pace, you have enjoyed that rare thing. An hour in the open air free from the noise of traffic. Be thankful.

Every time you visit the Devil's Dyke there's something astounding about it. You never get used to it. Maybe it's the steep sidedness of the combe. Maybe it's the comforting roundness of North Hill and Newtimber Hill behind it.

Maybe it's the roughness of the raw chalky turf down in the valley. Maybe it's the name itself - but the Devil's Dyke never ceases to enchant and intrigue.

In the days before Playstations, clubbing and plasma TVs, this was Brighton's playground where, for a penny or so, you could come to nature's theme park.
