The South Downs Way
The East Sussex Border

We're now on the last leg of our journey. A mile to the west of Ditchling Beacon the South Downs Way finally crosses into East Sussex. A signpost, known as Keymer Post more or less marks the spot.

This is also the crossing point of a footpath from Brighton to Keymer, down in the Weald below. This is part of the rambling Sussex Border Path.

As you walk on the final section beyond Jack and Jill windmills turn and look back for as all-encompassing a view of West Sussex as you can. To your right you will see the Weald stretching out towards the north west of the country. In front of you the mills. Behind them is Wolstenbury Hill with its beautiful and distinctive outline.

Between Wolstenbury Hill and Newtimber Hill, through a little V-shaped gap, you can see the clump of Chanctonbury Ring in the distance and beyond that Crown Tegleaze, twenty miles of so to the West.

If you are high enough up the slope, a little further to the left in the vista there is a small depression across which you can see the masts of Truleigh Hill, sitting proudly above Steyning. Looking round to the south you can see glimpses of the rooftops of Brighton and the shimmer of the English Channel beyond.

In that one view you have the whole of West Sussex - the Weald, the Downs, the Coastal Plain and the Sea.

It's a fitting place to end a journey across West Sussex on the South Downs Way.
