The South Downs Way
Buriton Farm
The South Downs Way around Buriton Farm has a very old fashioned feel to it.
Other parts of the Way feel genuinely ancient - on the section west of Monkton for example you get a real sense of walking where iron age man might have passed through.
But the area around Buriton Farm makes me think of a period before the motor car, before industrialised farming and a time when summers were hot and winters were hard. The farmer was content to farm and the only horsepower he had at his disposal could be brushed down at the end of the day.
The fields up here feel remote and a little lonely, but in a kindly way.
On a warm summer's day there are few better places in West Sussex.
