The South Downs Way
Milky Way

Down below this part of the South Downs Way's route lies the beautiful little village of Buriton. Many walkers use Buriton as a gateway for this part of the South Downs Way, finding that it provides easier access than Butser Hill.

And the village of Buriton itself is a real treasure, especially the large pond in the middle of the villages and the carefree Buriton ducks who quite rightly believe that they own the road and it's up to the motorist to wait for them to step out of the way in their own time.

The Milky Way is the name given to a steep path which cuts a diagonal line across the slope of the Downs, taking you down to Buriton through the wonderfully named Cockshot Wood.

The Milky Way gets its name from its milky white chalkiness rather than any galactic or chocolatey association.

As for Cockshot Wood...?

Buriton has two smart pubs and a railway tunnel, which you pass over as you walk along the South Downs Way.

Rather frustratingly, you can hear the trains, but it's more or less impossible to see them as they make their way out of Buriton Tunnel.
